YouTube gaming channel recommendations
As the YouTube algorithm is somehow getting worse every day, here are some of the channels which talk about gaming that I like to watch. Some of these already have quite an archive, so if you find anything you like, it might last for quite some time.
Channels listed in random order.
Essays and Documentaries
Mostly longer videos. These channels generally have a theme/vibe, but are not about specific games or series.
- Dungeon Chill: videogame retrospectives. Mostly talks about less famous games (or at least not famous in outside Japan).
- Moon Channel: video essays on games and Law. Is a lawyer at USA.
- Majuular: videogame retrospectives. Both old games and minor games. Has a nice mix of Western and Japanese games.
- Basement Brothers: reviews of PC-88 and PC-98 games. Also talks a lot about how to play these games on actual hardware.
- Archipel: documentaries on Japanese media. Usually Japanese audio with English subtitles.
- SummoningSalt: documentaries on speed-runs. Also a high-level speed-runner himself.
- Jacob Geller: video essays generally departing from some videogame. Content varies wildly between lighter videos and very heavy videos.
- Rosencreutz: video essays. Mostly about Paradox games or the relation between History and games. Sometimes also does nice more personal essays.
- Jeremy Parish: has a big ongoing retrospective on NES games. Currently starting simultaneous retrospectives on the Mega Drive and TurboGraphx-16.
- Skye: video essays. Generally quite intimate feeling videos.
- NoClip: professionally produced videogame documentaries. Nice mix of major/indie and new/old games.
Game-specific Channels
These channels are more specific. They focus on closely related games.
- DragonBlitz: Castlevania series speed-runs.
- Iron Pineapple: A lot about souls-likes. I’d recommend the “souls-like games you’ve never heard of” series for wholesome short reviews of souls-adjacent games.
- Wirtual and his sub-channel: Trackmania Nations and Trackmania 2020 videos. Some are just edited streams, some are documentaries.
- Pannenkoek2012: videos about Mario 64 glitches, famous for the A Button Challenge.
- Joshimuz: speed-runs of GTA games.
- Catalystz: speed-runs of Souls games. Has nice commented runs.
