re: i can't stop thinking about goodreads' top 100
I just saw this blog by woolgathering talking about the lack of classics on a Goodreads top 100 list. I went to give a look on it and two things caught my eyes:
- Lots of longer series of books and manga; and
- lots of them are later volumes.
So I suppose if one is reading volume 3 (or later) of some series, they must already like it a lot.
In some sense, this is the same that I think is happening with the highly rated Harry Potter fiction: people rating it like Harry Potter enough to read a 1800(!!!) page fanfic and post a review on a non-fanfic site.
Yet, I think the same happens with one that I'd consider a classic which is in the list. Lord of the Rings is a hard read for a fantasy series, but if you're reading the last one, you must like it a lot.
I must note that I found Maus being near the top an interesting exception.
This same should not happen with music, you do not need to like Please Please Me to like Abbey Road. So the ratings for later works of the same artist are less biased.
For movies, I just think they are shorter in general and there are less long series.1
Still, something similar to the books case happen with different results here. Relatively few people try to watch 413 long four-part movie series, people that do watch them probably like these kinds of movie already.
Just to be clear, this is not meant to be judgemental. I've watched my part of long movies. And while I don't watch many movies these days, I still read too long series of books and play too long videogames once in a while.
I think it is unfortunate that there are more long series of movies being made. Long book series are good; we do not need more MCU movies anymore.↩
